Book of the Year 2020, Ages 5-8

Goat on a Boat is about a remote island where the resident sheep are short on grass to eat. So when a little brown goat arrives in a sailboat, an argument erupts over what kind of reception the goat should receive.
It’s a rhyming tale in the style of Julia Donaldson, Lynley Dodd and many of the books of Dr Seuss. Perhaps you have a few of their books on your shelf already. If so, then you may enjoy Goat on a Boat too.
The story is about friendship, sharing and how when we help others we are really helping ourselves. It’s a fable, which is a kind of story where animals are the heroes and villains, but they also represent certain traits in people. Aesop, an ancient Greek writer, wrote fables such as ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ more than 2,500 years ago.
“Terrific… This is the essential message about sharing. Something all kids should learn”
– Julian Burnside AO QC
